Three dark heads bend over the map.

“Here.”  Elrohir's finger stabs down hard enough to wrinkle.

Legolas steadies him with a hand on his shoulder.  Elrohir shrugs him away.

“There are too many,” Elrond rubs his eyes.  “We know not who sent them.”  Meaning 'I cannot lose  more.'

Elladan cocks a brow.  “We know enough.”

“We must not rush in with swords drawn.”

“We would all be fools to pray for justice!  I will not sit on my hands and do nothing.”

“You are no longer children,” Elrond sighs.

“So we ride.” Legolas' voice holds danger and promise.

Elrohir smiles.

He leans against the jamb, wood splintering rough under his hand.  Lack of sleep grits against his eyelids but he refuses to rub them.  Refuses to submit to his aching body.  He gazes out over the city – still in this moment just after dawn.  The breeze is scented with jasmine and rose.  The sky blue as a robin's egg and just as fragile.  At any moment it could crack open, darkness bursting through to stain all.  Legolas feels it building over the mountains.  Behind him Elrohir slumbers still, curled beneath their blankets.  Legolas is alone in the pale blue morning.

I hesitate in the entrance.  Waiting. No longer certain of my welcome; no longer certain of anything. He looks up. His quill falls to the floor. He sits, still as his father's marble statues and as pale.

“Elrohir.” My voice, little more than a whisper, grates.

Silence between us, a chasm. Logs shift, flames crack. Smell of wood-smoke, ink, and parchment. Like him. Unable to bear his utter stillness, I kneel before him, take his cold hand. “Please.”

Cracks fissure through my heart. I have lost him.

Then, beyond hope, his hand on my head. “Legolas.” Forgiving. In spite of everything.

“What is this?”  Elrohir raised a brow at the feast spread before him.

Legolas smiled.  “'Tis Thanksgiving, is it not?”

Elrohir nodded, though he still seemed puzzled.  “I thought it was not a Mirkwood custom.”

“You are a long way from home on a celebration day.  And I have many thanks I wish to give.”  He drew Elrohir down before a crackling fire, then handed him a goblet of mulled wine.  “Though this year has been dark for me and mine, still has light been given.  'Ro, you are that light and I give thanks for you.”  Sweet wine flowed.

“There's just this for consolation: an hour here or there when our lives seem, against all odds and expectations, to burst open and give us everything we've ever imagined....” The Hours

One might think that to elves, unlike Men, years pass as moments.  Betimes 'tis true – but not always.  Though millennia have passed since Elrohir's eyes met mine across the courtyard, I remember every hour with perfect clarity.  Especially one.  Autum in Imladris; trees cloaked red and gold.  The air held the promise of snow.  He stood alone, gazing through the library window.  I came upon him there.  He shivered in the empty cold, but did not turn to me.  Until I reached out, placed one hand upon his shoulder.  Heat flowed between us and I knew – we were not alone.

Though the twins looked identical, Legolas had not spent more than a short time with them before he understood their differences.  Elladan, elder by mere moments, was the more demonstrative.  Quick to anger, but quicker to laugh.  He preferred action to discussion.  He spent long hours on the practice grounds and equally long making mischief.  Elrohir was the younger and more reserved.  He considered movements before making them.  He studied history and healing.  When he joined Elladan in mischief, his silver tongue spared them punishment.  He held his heart close.  Of the two, it was Elrohir who captured Legolas' attention.

Hair black as pitch, pulled back and twisted in intricate braids which hung past broad shoulders.  Bright argent eyes sparkling with wit and wisdom – farther back, deeper in, longing and compassion.  Full lips quirked in identical smiles, holding just the barest edge of mischief.  Bodies sturdier than most elves; torsos well defined from countless hours spent in battle.  Arms lithe but strong as the steel they wielded.  Long legs slightly spread and planted firmly.  Neither were easy to unbalance.  Graceful, powerful, fell warriors and staunch allies.  Mirror images.  Even so, Legolas never mistook one of Elrond's sons for the other.

Lord Elrond claims that endings are no more than a circle completed.  That to have beginnings means endings will follow.  Night follows day, death life.  It is the order of things.  I heard his teaching; I believed his words.  But they never fully penetrated.  Or perhaps, were I truthful, I hoped that Elrond was mistaken for once.  He was not.  Autumn is a season of endings – days grow short and cold, trees lose their leaves...  Both twins grow quiet, distant.  I see them drifting from me and I am powerless.  Darkness grows on the horizon, looming large as this ending.

Most of the time, being in the middle suited Legolas just perfectly.   He would blink awake at dawn, warmth surrounding him – nestled cozily between Elrohir and Elladan, dark hair and blond mingling on the pillows.  Many nights passed in mutual sharing of burdens and joys and the taking and giving of pleasure.  Legolas thought they had found equilibrium.  Until the balance began to shift and the middle was no longer a place of comfort.  In lieu of joy there was anger, in lieu of pleasure came recrimination.  No longer a haven, bed became an extension of battlefields.  Three were sundered.

Most people prefer beginnings – but I often find them discomfiting.  It takes me time to find my footing.  My place.  Except once; when I met Elrohir.  We faced each other in the courtyard as Lord Elrond made introductions and all else faded.  Even in the midst of my grief I recognized him.  It was as though we were not meeting for the first time, but taking up the threads of an old friendship.  I could only see his eyes, silver gaze mirroring my loss, but lit deep within by compassion.  In that moment I understood; somehow I had come home.

Part One: Tuile – True Spring

The first day of Tuile dawned bright and clear. A breeze, lightly scented with roses and a hint of coming Laire drifted through the library where two dark heads bent over scraps of parchment. Quills raced over the page until the errant breeze rustled the curtains, then one slowed and finally stilled. A head raised, peeked surreptitiously out the window. Fierce whispers broke the silence.

"But Erestor..."

"Will never know if we're back before our lesson ends."
Two identical grins bloomed over matching faces and they slipped out the window, across the gardens and away.

Prologue: Coire – Early spring

He stood alone on the balcony, hands curled slightly over the railing. He gazed out over the land that was his home, his haven. It was what he had made it, but it did not house his heart. The wheel turned; it came again. A breeze, softer than had touched him in what felt an age, ruffled his hair but did not make him reach for his robes. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, tasting the coming spring on his tongue, sweet with the promise of new life.
