At Four Months

Dear Tai,
Ah my baby boy, my dude-head, my boober. It's been another amazing month. You are becoming more and more like a real person every day. I can't even believe it!
We had our first Mother's Day - and it was fabulous, even if you were on the very edge of teething. (Drooling everywhere!) We went out to brunch with Dad and Grandma T and ate far too much. You had a good time playing with a spoon and going from Dad's lap to Grandma's lap only pausing long enough to eat with me. Your favorite thing to do at a restaurant is to sit on someone's lap (because you have to be in the middle of things) and play with a spoon - eat it, poke yourself in the eye with it, whatever.
One of your new favorite ways to express emotion this month is shrieking. You shriek when you're happy, hungry, mad, bored, tired. Sometimes it's cute. Sometimes it's loud. Very loud. Needless to say, I like it best when you're happy. Even when it does make me feel the need to get off the MUNI half way home.
You've been teething a lot already this month. You drool like a faucet and you often have to wear a bib or your shirt is soaked only a couple of hours into your day. You chew things furiously - anyone's hand, your giraffe (which is your favorite thing to chew after someone's fingers), your seal, your own hand, your shirt, your car seat straps. Sometimes your mouth really hurts and then you cry and cry and nothing makes you feel better. Then your Dad and I are both very sad. The first time it happened I tried everything to make you feel better, but we ended up having to let you cry until you fell asleep. I know it's not the last time that I can't make it all better, but I wish it were.
You've started reaching out and grabbing things, and then putting them in your mouth. You have gotten so good at this so quickly - it amazes me. I love to watch you figure out how your arms and hands work. You've learned how to take your pacifier out of your mouth, but you aren't quite as good at getting it back in. (But you're getting close!)
You're also getting close to rolling over from your back to your belly. So far you tend to roll onto one side or the other (left side first) and just hang out there. Maybe because tummy time still isn't your favorite thing? But you are starting to enjoy it more - maybe because you're getting so good at holding your head and chest up.
You've noticed yourself in a mirror - at Grandma T's for the first time. So I brought out the mirror we bought for you and I hold it up for you while you're on your tummy. You like to grin at the other baby, and once in a while you even talk to him, and laugh. You definitely flirt, as you do with everyone you meet. You are quite the social butterfly and *love* being in new places with new people who will worship you as you deserve. You've gone to the park with Anat and Talya and rode a swing for the first time. You loved it. You also reached up to touch one of your toys on your gym toy, too. You seemed to like the horse best.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you learn in the next month.

Every time I walk past St. Luke's hospital (and I do that pretty regularly on my way to Natural Resources) I always remember the day you were born. It was one of the best days of my life. I am so glad you're here, and so lucky that you're my son.
Love always,
Your Momma
