Post Election Thoughts in Brief
Nov. 5th, 2008 10:20 pmFor the first time in years I am hopeful about the direction our country is taking. Once again we have a president (elect) who is eloquent. No longer will I cringe and want to plug my ears every time the president speaks. This alone is exciting. But what's more, we have a president who, when the country was first created, could have been owned by the president. Hopefully this election will encourage more necessary talks about race in the US. I don't believe racism has been completely eradicated, but this is a step in the right direction. I am pleased to have my son growing up in this country, finally.
Unfortunately I am completely disappointed in the Prop. 8 decision. It's so hard to believe that more than half of those who voted here in California believe that discrimination should be in our constitution. I don't know how people believe that we can have 'separate but equal'. This has been decided - that isn't constitutional. I need to get involved again and help to make the change I want to see. I'm just not sure how to go about that. It seems like it would be good to try and help people who voted 'Yes' what that means to same-sex couples.
Two steps forward, one step back.
